Description
Saturday grocery runs across the South often meant a trip to the Piggly Wiggly. This vintage Piggly Wiggly porcelain sign features the iconic smiling pig in the white paper hat, with large Piggly Wiggly lettering around the outside in green, red and white, on an 11 3/4″ round face with excellent colors and porcelain.
Clarence Saunders opened the first Piggly Wiggly in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1916, and it is known as the first true self-service grocery store, where shoppers picked items off the shelves themselves instead of handing a list to a clerk. The cheerful pig became one of the best-known faces in American grocery shopping. This sign is real porcelain, made with glass enamel fired onto heavy gauge steel for a hard, glossy finish built to last. It’s a fun piece for a kitchen, a garage, a general store collection or anyone who grew up shopping at the Pig.
