Esso Marine Popeye Porcelain Sign – Oil & Greases, 12″

This Esso Marine porcelain sign shows Popeye at a ship’s wheel, his pipe in his mouth, with Olive Oyl leaning in beside him on a deep blue field. The Esso oval sits at the top, “Essomarine Oil & Greases” is lettered on the left, and “Made in USA” appears on the right.

Esso was the trade name of Standard Oil, built from the letters S and O, and its marine line kept boats running on lakes and harbors. Popeye first showed up in the comics in 1929. The sign is real porcelain, with layers of glass enamel fired onto steel, which gives it deep color and a smooth, glassy shine. It looks great in a lake house, a boathouse, a garage or a man cave, and it makes a fun gift for a boater or a Popeye fan.
